The Birth of
THE ROTARY CLUB OF MANILA METRO
As part of the Rotary International never ending drive to invigorate the world of Rotary, and in response to the challenge of Past RI Pres. Herbert G. Brown for clubs to bring in 85,000 new members and 949 new clubs in RY 1995-96, PDG Danny Yu tasked the District Extension Committee under the Chairmanship of PDG Herman Gamboa to study and make the corresponding recommendations for the extension fo new clubs in the district. One of the recommendations for the organization of a new club is to cover the areas like Quiapo, San Miguel, Binondo, Sampaloc, San Nicholas, Santa Cruz, Divisoria, Paco, Ermtia, Malate and Tondo.
To implement this recommendation, PDG Danny Yu appointed PDG Sonny T. Ventura, Charter President of the Rotary Club of Downtown Manila as the District Governor’s Special Representative and his club, RC Downtown Manila as the sponsoring club. In search for a worthy RCDM member to undertake this great task, on the 8th of September 1995, during a regular club meeting, a consensus was taken and on the following week, the club (RCDM) Board of Directors passed a resolution appointing Past Secretary/Director Alex Yu Huang, a young, dynamic and dedicated Rotarian as the Chairman of the Club’s Extension Committee. A survey on the proposed areas to be covered was made and the results justified the formation of a new club.
The process of inviting prospective members went into full blast with PDG/CP Alex Y. Huang carrying on the main burden of enticing his friends and associates doing business and/or practicing their professions in the proposed area to attend the pre-organizational Rotary Information and orientation meetings. Through the leadership and expert guidance of PDG/DGSR/CP Sonny T. Ventura and the support of the pillars of RCDM: PDG Johnny Aruego, Past Presidents Caloy Rosales, Winnie Abulencia, Along Co, Willie Yu, Johnny T.K. Cheng, Jr., Mar Sandoval and Johnny Blanco-Antillon, 5 consecutive preliminary informative orientation meetings were held at the Century Park Hotel, wherein intensive Rotary information and inspirational talks were given.
Succeeding so well, and because their words fell upon good and willing hearts and minds, the majority fo the prospective candidates signified their willingness to become a part fo the worldwide movement called “ROTARY.”
PDG Johnny Aruego suggested the name THE ROTARY CLUB OF MANILA METRO and was eventually conceptualized by the entire membership. The regular weekly meeting place and time is set at 7:30 PM at Century Park Hotel, Manila. The logo was agreed upon and so as the banner and the bannerettes for the club.
Henceforth, on October 10, 1995 the new club was formally organized as a provisional club. Through the concerted efforts of DGSR Sonny Ventura and the Council fo Advisers, the charter of the Rotary Club of Manila Metro was approved by Rotary International on the 14th of November 1995, in a record time of just four working days.
The third club organized and sponsored by RCDM was formed and formally admitted to the great district, District 3810. With the quality and enthusiasm of the entire membership, the outstanding leadership of its Charter President and officers, and the full support of the sponsoring club and the District, Rotary Club of Manila Metro will surely be an asset in the Rotary’s unending agenda of “Service Above Self.”
