The Sabah Crisis

March 8, 2013 - Dayang Fatima Celia Kiram, the wife of Sultan Jamalul Kiram III, guested during the weekly meeting of RC Manila South. Dayang Fatima talked about the root causes of conflict in Southern Mindanao particularly Zulu on the issue of Sabah territory.



During the forum, Dayang Fatima said that Sabah or North Borneo was leased to Alred Dent and Baron Von Overdeck of the British North Borneo.


The chartered company, however, turned over the rights over Sabah to the British Commonwealth through an agreement in 1946 but not to the Sultanate of Zulu. When Malaysia gained independence from the British, the British commonwealth turned over Sabah to Malaysia. She mentioned and suggested some recommendations like to revive the Sultanate and the restoration of the cultural and historical section of Zulu area among others.
