‘A Star is Born’

Rotary Club of Quirino Manila Central Story

The formation of a new Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Quirino-Manila started in an informal luncheon meeting of four avid friends in the persons of Antonio Sy, Willy Tan, Rey Chang and Romy Pangan at the Causeway Restaurant along Adriatico St., Malate, Manila.

Anton broached the idea of forming a Rotary Club with prospective members who are golf enthusiasts but with a heart for community service. Soon, those meetings became frequent and instilled in them is the fervent desire to form a new Rotary Club. They agreed to invite and bring more friends on their succeeding meetings as prospective members.

On February 25, 2002, the first regular meeting was held at the Korean Village Restaurant with DG Rodolfo ‘Rudy’ Estrellado, DGSR Ernesto ‘Ernie’ Choa supported by the officers of Rotary Club of Bagumbayan-Manila headed by President Ricky ‘Ric’ U. Uy.

The strong camaraderie among the 25 members and their common interest to serve the community gave the club’s first community Project - Providing Water Tanker to aid the fire volunteers in the Quirino-Malate area through the club’s Fund Raising Campaign during the 8th Leg of the Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament.

The club was officially recognized on March 27, 2002 by Rotary International as the Rotary Club of Quirino-Manila to give emphasis to its geographical location from the south of Pres. Quirino Ave., cor. Pres. Roxas Blvd. going northward to the foot of Nagtahan Bridge at the corner of Paz Guazon St. encompassing the Pandacan area to the west bordering on Dr. M.L. Carreon St. and Tejeron St. leading southward covering the San Andres area bordering Estrada St. and Vito Cruz St. leading back to Pres. Roxas Boulevard. The territory also partially covers the area of Malate to the east starting from corner of Pres. Roxas Blvd. and Remedios St. going northward bordering Pres. Quirino Ave. up to the foot of Nagtahan Bridge.
