United Manila Relief Operations

August 11, 2012

by AS Badette Punzalan

When Metro Manila was hit by a heavy rains and floods brought about by southwest monsoon or “Habagat” last August 7, 2012, our District Governor Maeng Mercado personally shed out from his pocket a sizeable amount of funds to launch the District 3810 Relief Operations.

For the Manila Area Operation, Senior Deputy Governor John Ang disseminated the information among Peace Builder Presidents. He volunteered his place in Cubao as drop-off area of relief goods. The generosity of Rotarians and their spirit of kindness and love for our fellowmen poured with the continuous influx  of donations and funds. From the Manila Area district Officers, we are truly grateful and proud to be a Rotarian.

To kick-off the Manila Area Relief Operations, Sdg John and Manila Area Peace Builder Presidents conducted a feeding project at the poor community living under the bridge of Brgy. Solis, Antipolo, Tondo, Manila last August 9, Thursday. There were around five big cookwares of hot chicken arroz caldo consumed by a total number of 500 plus children.

Special mention to the Peace Builder Presidents, Rotarians, Rotaractors and other volunteers who helped in the feeding project.

Right after the successful feeding program, SDG John announced the REPACKING OF RELIEF GOODS as scheduled on the 10th of August, Friday. The next day, the repacking of relief goods started around 1pm and lasted until 6:30pm. At first, looking at the big task of repacking the goods, we thought it wouldn’t be possible to finish it in a day but due to the people who went and volunteered with us and the atmosphere of camaraderie, the whole repacking seems to be light. The joy of helping our kababayans won over the fatigue and the task appeared to be light seeing the kindness around. PbP Charlemagne of RC Manila Magic also elicited the help of Rotaractors in the repacking of goods. The UNTV news crew was able to document the relief courtesy of the interview with Sdg Nito Siasat.
