Global President? Iíve never thought of becoming a Rotarian. Thereís this connotation that Rotary is only for rich people. Last year, I just supported my Dad, VIP Tony Esteban as he tried his best to help as many people as possible. I was never a President of a Student Council nor an activist. I was so focused with my studies. But I did volunteer to do storytelling to less fortunate people and other civic activities. I was contented, until Rotary came to the picture....
Looking back, I would always question how come my dad would come home late every night because of the inductions or be absent during my birthday celebration because of the midyear review. Sometimes, he would just ask me to edit a letter regarding a project or would ask me to buy these things to be given as a donation for those who are in need. I was even asked to look for a sister club abroad. It was a challenge because it was a difficult task given to me. And I was so fulfilled when I was able to look for one and closed the deal. Slowly, I was opening up to the idea that my dad has a new family... his ROTARY Family. I would slowly ask him from time to time what was it all about, what were the objectives, and why did it exist. Then came the time when I was elected as the President Elect. I asked myself several times before accepting the reality that my life would never be the same again. And I was right. I dreaded the day that I will be called President Em by my officers and members. There was anxiety on my part but yet I was excited. And here I am, Global President Em.
Did I make the right choice? I guess I did. I believe in life, we are faced with several opportunities. It is not easy to be the president. Some may take it as a threat, but I choose to take it as an opportunity. It is an opportunity to share a part of myself to other people and be of service to them. It is an opportunity to reach out and make a difference. It is an opportunity to change the lives of other people.
I can only be successful in my term if the club will be united and will be as a team. So together, let us build communities and bridge continents.
